Default Liverpool Scottish Cameron- Gaunt naming

Went to a couple of general antique fairs this morning at one a dealer had card of badges which he described as "Better quality restikes ".

The Liverpool Scottish ( Cameron ) example had the Gaunt impression on the rear of one of the arms of St.Andrews cross.

This confirms what I have thought for some time the Gaunt naming on this pattern badge does not guarantee that the badge is genuine.

In this case the dealer was "wrong"!! I would have snapped it up!

I have one marked in the same manner and I'm fully confident that it's a ' good un ', perhaps another example of, if someone says it, no matter whom, it must be true ??

A bit like reading an article in a newspaper, me thinks ??

Dave.

Peter,

Can you remember how much he was asking for it, at all?

Peter.

Cool restrikes . . !

I too have encountered badges being sold as restrikes which were anything but restrikes. As only Peter was present and a well known collector of Kings Liverpool badges, only he can be sure of what the badges authenticity was.

If the dealer was selling badges as restrikes then that was fair enough in my opinion, caveat emptor . . !

The last image is very small, SG, but it looks like the feared 'GAUNT DOT LONDON' mark that has been widely discussed here on the forum.

Can you confirm either way?

PJ

There are good and bad Gaunt "Dot" London marks, 99% are bad and the odd 1% good, I've never seen a fake mark on anything but a slider (Yet!).. See the Forum guide....

http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/makers_marks/gaunt.htm

The one on the badge in question is IMO good and although Peter is the only person to see the alleged Restrike I would say that in this case the dealer is probably wrong and I'd go back and snap it up! I bought the badge shown in the link below at Scotch Corner many years ago for pennies as the Dealer said it was a copy! Who was I to argue with a Dealer, I just gave him some pennies and walked (skipped) away with a smile on my face.. and he with egg!

Hee, hee, hee

Always nice to get one over on dealers!

Never in a month of Sunday's would I have, with my limited knowledge have considered that one a copy. That's a beauty.

Simon.
