Default Military Police cloth badges
Attached are scans of various CMP and RMP cloth items I have. I would like to know more about the use of the square black/red 'MP' flashes, and the two larger bullion badges. The latter shown next to a beret badge for scale.

The 'MP' badges don't appear to have been worn during WW2, and I can find no entry in the Ordnance List of Changes for their post-war introduction.

The embroidered on felt version came from the family of an Airborne man, together with embroidered 'AIRBORNE' flashes and 'PARACHUTE' titles. There was some family confusion as to whether or not the former owner had been a wartime paratrooper who had joined the RMP TA post-war, or been a wartime RMP attached to an Airborne Division.

The woven version with a merrowed edge appears to be a DZ or TRF of more modern manufacture, but is not of the design approved for 16 Air Assault Bde.

Stephen,

The black on red MP embroidered on felt was worn on the dpm combat cap in BAOR in the 1970s-1980s as more 'tactical' than the SD Cap with or without red cover or the red beret. See photo

The black on red MP with with merrowed edges is the TRF worn by the RMP and RAF P&SS on temperate and desert dpm clothing.

Thanks for replies. I did not think that the larger badges were big enough to be blazer badges, and my knowledge of RMP insignia is so limited that I wasn't aware there was a cloth No1 badge.

I shall have to try and find a copy of Red Cap, but p&p Downunder is prohibitive.

According to Carnall there wasn't. One of your identical badges is shown on p. 45 fig 17 and described under 'Collectables - Memorabilia' as one of 'a selection of bullion and embroidered blazer badges'. To my knowledge, and to Carnall's, the only bullion badges worn were the post War smaller beret badges. Hodges p. 272 also states: 'Officers badges are produced in silver, except for the beret badge , which is embroidered.'
Carnall, like most other badge book authors, isn't infallible, but I believe he's got this bit correct.
How many other corps, or regiments for that matter, wear or wore bullion cap badges in No 1 dress?

I cannot fault your logic about No1 Dress badges, and not for one minute do I think the RMP would deviate from Regulations. However, if they are blazer badges they must have very small chests!

Yes it is Chris - Fitness for role inspection at Herford Det, 114 Pro Coy RMP in the 80's.
