1st Monmouths
Hello all,
I've picked this badge up this morning on approval & I'm checking to see if it's a good one or not before I part with any funds. Cheers Steve

Oh right. I thought that the 2nd was in brass & the 1st in white metal.

The 1-4th Bn all wore brass in khaki caps at some time. When the WD took over production of the badge in 1915 only the brass one was authorised for issue.
The w/m badge was certainly worn but this may have been pre-war and in No1 dress caps. Post 1920 the 1st Bn first adopted the wreath badge with battlehonours in gilding metal and then in w/m. This one has provenance so I know is genuine: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ictureid=43838 |

Thanks for the pointer. I'm beginning to think it's a wrong 'un & will be going back. The front foot looks to be held in the wrong position.

None of the examples I own has the front paw in that position. It appears to have been painted black at one time.

It is a very peculiar looking badge!

I have a WM Monmouths like this in my collection. The extended part of the dragons arm is very thin piece of metal so I expect yours has taken a knock at some point in its life which has compressed it backwards and projected the claws down. A drop from hand height onto a hard surface would definitely do it IMO. The paw on your badge is also mistruck as the poor dragon is missing it’s top digit! The Monmouths shown in the original edition Gaylor is from this die, so chances are it’s from an original die. My badge is a nice crisp strike, good rear detail, nice period slender slider (like yours) but with a partial crimp mark. However I do worry as to how thin and light my badge is and that it doesn’t seem to have much age. Add to that the number see on eBay and dealers sites for what should be a pre-20’s badge worn by one single battalion (give or take the wearing by other Bns on dress caps) makes me think this type may be a candidate for being re-struck from the original die. Cheers, Luke |

If you compare your badge to the Ministry of Information badge in my album you will see that the tail is also different: void in my photo.

Makes me think even more this type of badge has been re-struck from an original die, even perhaps using old stocks of original sliders. Noticed the badge on the original post is also missing the spines between the wings and tail, so I think it’s rather mis-stuck. Last edited by Luke H; 29-01-18 at 10:54 PM. Reason: Spelling |
