Default Royal Engineers Wireless Signaller India

A nice dated shot of a Sapper wearing an unusual helmet flash. Place and date on the picture but can anyone identify who might have worn the flash?

Only 5 Routleys served overseas with the Royal Engineers during the Great War.

Frederick G Routley Royal Engineers 508437, (T)2845 

Harold C Routley Royal Engineers 508518, (T)2940 

Joseph N Routley Royal Engineers 25659 

Leonard J Routley Royal Engineers 508620, (T)5084 

Richard W Routley Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, To Royal Engineers, To RE 7768, 249934, WR/126662

However, I think that the initials are H G or H J.

His uniform looks more Artillery to me.

Is that a badge on his right forearm?

This chap might be a candidate as he definitely served in India and has only the British War Medal.

Its possible, IF he reached Warrant Officer rank, which he could well have by 1919 and the badge I mentioned earlier is a rank badge of a Crown over a gun.

Artillery Wireless Operator, they sequenced a series of codes/abbreviations advancing communications between units.

I think it’s a shoulder title on the helmet. There’s an interesting post on a similar badge here: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/fo...-cloth-titles/
RE in my opinion.

Jon,
I think this pagri flash was worn in India by men of RE Signal Service whilst serving with the Wireless Companies. c1922. Withdrawn after formation of RCoS.
I have a note that Mollo's collection in the IWM has a photo regimental signallers in India (mainly SLI & S. Lancs Regt) pictured wearing a dark oblong flash on their Wolsoley helmets. Patch white embroidered 'WIRELESS'.
It seems to be a sort of trade badge or means of identification, much like the blue/white armbands.

Stephen.
