Quarter follis of Antioch.
Struck in the reign of Maximinius 11, Augustus of the east 310-312 AD. Obverse, GENIO ANTIOCHENI Tyche of Antioch, turreted and veiled seated between the mountains Saturninus and Silipius with stalks of wheat. River god Orontes swimming at her feet. Reverse, APOLLOLI SANCT, Apollo standing facing left holding a patera in his right hand and a lyre with his left. S in right field (6th Officina). An active campaign of persecution against Christians by Max 11 during 310-12 prompted the eastern cities of Nicomedia, Antioch and Alexandria whose economy depended upon pagan shrines, oracles, sanctuaries, temples games and festivals to issue small bronze coins where the bust of the emperor was replaced by a cult statue. |

What a fantastic range of interests - I could not stop going through every item. A very educational process for me ... never knew the origin of porcelain before or known such fascinating histories of ships and coins. Stamps, cards and medals too - what a range of interests. Many thanks for sharing - I will keep coming back to read more.
As someone has already posted ... like having a museum available at the touch of a button. Totally captivating. Mike |

AE 26 Gordian 111 234-238 AD.
Worn coin of Adrianopolis in Thrace. Counterstamped XV of Legio Quinta Decima Apollonaris. Also stamped with head of Athena wearing Corinthian helmet (Her guise as the goddess of war). Reverse is almost completely worn but portrays the city gates between two towers with conical tops. Last edited by rmarsden; 15-08-17 at 06:26 PM. |

Scratch built cigarette box, the lid carved with the Bagdad Bell and Black Watch scroll above. Inscription inside reads "LATVIAN MADE IN DUISBERG". "TO CPT DONALDSON FOR DUTYS REMEMBERENCE 8.2.49 30.9.49 "LATVIAN GUARDS SQUAD".
These squads were recruited form ex members of the Latvian Legion 15th Waffen-SS Division deemed not to have been responsible for any atrocities. Supervised by British officers there main duty was guarding POWs. At Duisberg the home of the merged 1BW & 2BW there was a large Displaced Persons Camp. Cpt Donaldson was ex 2BW. The Bagdad Bell was a war trophy of the 2nd BW, they were the first unit to enter Bagdad in March 1917. The bell was captured by the advanced guard at Samarra Railway April 1917.
