Default KRRC badge backing query

All,
I believe that a red backing was to be worn with the badge on the OR service dress cap, but some photos circa ww1 era seem to show no backing at all.
Was the red backing dispensed with at times?
Thanks,

CB

It was not always worn, especially in the field, where it quickly became filthy. My impression is that it was probably eventually reserved for wear out of the line and when on leave/furlough.
