Default South African Eighth Army Shield

an epaulette slip on of a member of the South African Army attached to the Eighth Army (possibly SA Signals or Engineers?). The Crusader shield and black background are made out of very thin leather: possibly theatre made in North Africa or Italy? any other occurrences of such a pattern? Thank you in advence and all the best, L.
