Default New member in Victoria, BC Canada looking for other collectors

Good aft I'm happy to have come upon this forum its been difficult to find like minded collectors in my locale. I came into the hobby of badges and ribbons by inheritance, and have come to value the badges though its difficult to make sense of them at times due to the state in which they were received! Hence, Ive got a long task ahead of me in sorting and identifying, grading and evaluating the collection as it stands. Im sure as time goes on I will have many questions and hopefully some answers for others questions as well. My Grandad was very much interested i the history of the badges, medals and ribbons he collected through the years, and as I go through the mountains of paperwork I find myself often interested in the stories and research he has invested into each.

I would be very much interested in finding some collecters locally, but for the time being, hello, my name is John...

Hello John, Welcome to the Forum. Your account is active and open for posts.
There are several collectors out west. Hopefully they will connect.

Not sure about collectors but I did see a militaria store in Victoria when I was there in August.

Maybe that could be a place to visit to find more local collectors?

Hi John welcome to the Forum, lots of help here! The British Legion in Cambell River had a table (14 foot long) with Canadian badges on place settings where the badge belonged to the person who deemed that chair his place, if that still is there? but there was a collector up there at one time - I wasn't in the area long enough to get to meet him, but wished I had!

There are much more knowledgeable collectors on here than I but more than happy to get you on your way if you need any queries answered! what books have you inherited as these will give you a good start, will P.M. you my E-mail.

All the best billy

I was a collector in Campbell River until I joined the forces in 1986 - I grew up there. There was a veteran, Alex Crawford, who collected badges, and I believe his collection is on display in the lounge of Branch 137.

HI John ............ I just joined the forum today. I live out on the Saanich Peninsula, so not far from you. I dabble around a bit with estates, give talks to non-profit groups on "old stuff" and occasionally write articles on collectibles for magazines. Brent at Command Post sits in with me on some of my talks.

I'm a huge fan of research, which is why I'm fascinated by military history. My late grandfather and great uncle served in the CEF, and before that, in the Royal Navy, and this has been a springboard for me.

It'll likely take me a while to navigate around the forum, but I hope to contribute from time to time.

............. Michael

Default Hello from another Canadian

Hi John ........ thought I'd sent a message last night, but it didn't go through. I've just joined the forum myself.

I'm practically a neighbour (Saanichton), and have had a long time interest in (though no collection per se) of military badges.

My Grandfather and Great Uncle served with the 88th in WW1, and in the Royal Navy before that. An uncle was KIA in WW2 while serving aboard HMS Illustrious. This info has encouraged my interest in military memorabilia over the years.

I often run into a stone wall when trying to research something ...... currently trying to match a War Service Badge registration number to the soldier who received it, but there doesn't appear to be any accessible online data base for this info.

Brent at CP is a long time friend - he sits in with me from time to time when I'm giving talks on antiques to non-profit groups.

We might recognize each other from antiques/collectibles shows, ..... should try to meet up for a coffee.

............ Michael
