Sheffield University OTC
Any thoughts on this Sheffield University OTC gilding metal badge?
Would I be right in saying it is an early version of the badge prior to AA being introduced and of so, what sort of date would it be? (It will be offered for sale shortly). Many thanks, Ivan |

According to some sources there is an anodised version of this badge Ivan but nobody seems to have one or have seen one.
The wording of the scroll changed for both patterns of anodised badge that are known to exist. "University of Sheffield UTC" and "University of Sheffield OTC" .The OTC version is still in use at the present ,although the badge may now be made from "new metal". K and K gives a sealing date of 1950 for the UTC version of the badge. |

The OTC currently wears a/a cap badges. I have seen quite a few.

Certainly not an uncommon badge in a/a (Ive spent quite a bit of time working with Sheffield OTC and seen more than a few).
But having said that, the a/a badge may become less common as the detachment at Somme Barracks in Sheffield gets smaller now its joined with Leeds OTC to become the Yorkshire Officer Training Regiment. Still, any ideas on the gilding metal version? Ivan |

This is the description of the Sheffield University OTC cap badge from the "famous" 1938 article on badges of the OTC by Ernest Martin and is based on responses from units enquiring about their insignia.

The senior Division of the OTC came into existence in 1908. Became STC in 1940 before reverting to University OTCs in 1948. Some units used the STC title others had UTC.

I think I'm right in saying the UTC version is the rarer type.

Early anodised "of" was added to the scroll I do not know when from but would guess early fifties?
