Some Naval Police Brassards

Below is a sampling of Naval Police and Patrol brassards in my collection. All are Canadian made or with a Canadian provinance and date from the Great War to the 1960s.<br clear=all>

To add to John's examples of these I have included a few from my collection:

Three more. The middle brassard is quite long (18 1/2") & possibly would be for wear on the cuff of the winter greatcoat.

The bottom brassard is printed, button attachment, & circa 1944.

Three more , & these date form the period of the change in the RCN insignia from the WWII period style to the 1950's style.
The Naval Police branch was changed to the Regulating branch, & the NP was removed from the brassard leaving only the Crown.

The top brassard is quite long as well (18"),

Here is an example of the Naval Police rate badge worn by ratings on the right sleeve of their tunics. It was worn from the period ca. 1890 to 1919

The NP rate badge disappeared from general use after WWI, & was replaced by a single (King's) crown. The branch name was changed from Police to Regulating..

A CDV of a CPO wearing the NP rate on his lapels.

A CPO Naval Policeman was the Master at Arms of the Ship & the only rating entitled to wear an officer's sword on ceremonial ocassions.

Sorry to dredge this up but I have always wondered exactly what the brassards with just the crown were for, I have been told they were to be worn on greatcoats by RPOs and the insignia on their uniform would of course not be visible.

I dont know if this would answer your question, but the patrol armlet was worn on the lower LEFT sleeve of both the uniform tunic & the greatcoat.

The 2WW photo below shows a Petty Officer wearing the armlet.
This PO wears no rate badge, if he was of the Regulating branch he would have worn the crown on his right sleeve.

However, Patrolmen did not necesarily have to be from the Regulating branch, duty men could be drawn from other branches for shore patrol duties, & I have served in this capacity in the "old RCN".
