Default U.S Sailor captured on Corregidor group.

Here is a grouping I have had in my collection for many years and thought to share it today with everyone here. The Sailors name was Jack L. Bishop. He was a crew member of the minesweeper USS Quail. The Quail had been tasked with sweeping Manila Bay and later with sweeping the lanes in and around the island fortress Corregidor. The Quail would eventually be scuttled to avoid capture. Jack Bishop went onto Corregidor to continue fighting. Many of his crew members would escape to Australia in a small motor launch which is another story of it's own.

Jack was captured in early May of 1942. He would be on the Bataan death march and move into a POW camp on the Island of Luzon. He and many other POW's would later be sent to camps in Japan. In Jack's case to Osaka Camp where he would be liberated in late 1945. I will let the photos tell the some of story. There was much paperwork and documentation regarding his captivity and the descriptions in most cases are quite horrific so that has been left out at this point. The last photo here shows a map of Corregidor where Jack has indicated the location and time of his capture on the May 6th. Interestingly he has noted on front and back of this map the names of 2 Naval officers that were with him, both of which were killed. Lt. Otter and Ensign Lloyd. Both of these officers would receive the Navy Cross Posthumously and have US Navy ships named after them.

Will spread this out into several posts.

An official letter to the family upon the re-capture of Corregidor. Jack had written this letter to tell his family or whoever found it what had happened to him. Amazingly it survived and was found by U.S troops in 1945. It was sent home to his parents.

More. Photos of the Osaka Camp. Jack has used an arrow to indicate his location. The other photo must be post surrender or near to it. The Japanese guard is looking much more agreeable. There is a Commonwealth soldier in the front row left as you can see. Jack is in the front row on the end right. With his mother on returning home
