Default Today's find.

Hi Guys,
Today at my local market I came across this cap/collar? badge 31mm in length. Having searched the net I believe it to be a Victorian (pre-federation Australia) Militia Artillery badge post 1884. I would be interested in your comments and further info if possible. I paid $40 for it -hope I didn't get stooged!
Jim

Can anyone put a value on it? I was initially reluctant to pay $40 for an unknown badge at the time, although the latin motto rang a bell as I thought and later confirmed, it is on a pre federation Victorian military belt buckle in my collection.

Don't know about the collar badge, but to give you a bit of an idea, there are currently two pre federation hat badges for sale, with the same motto, $250 and $200, and a shoulder belt plate also with the same motto for $450.

Thanks Phil.
At least I would get money back, plus a little more, if I ever moved it on.

Jim
PS. As a matter of interest, where are these badges for sale?

Hello Jim, items are for sale from I. S. Wright Militaria, or just go to Ebay and type in Australian Military Badges, you will see them easily enough.

hi jim
its the post 1884 pill box cap badge. not a collar and should measure about 32mm.
they are worth $100-$200
nice badge at a good price.
hold onto it as once cossum publishes his pre fed book, the prices will probably go up
bc
btw not sure I would be basing current prices on I.S.Wrights lists. just check out the Brit items

Hi Jim

Thats a great badge and the condition and price are good. I have the badge and photos of it being worn by Vic Pre Fed Artillery. It was worn on the small round pill box cap, without a peak.

Pm sent

Cheers

Phil.

Hi BC,
Thanks for your very welcome advice. Much of what we collect would be lost forever if it wasn't for guys like you and the other Forum members that are willing to share knowledge and experience with newcomers such as myself. I am primarily a generalist collector of WW1 and earlier Australian militaria and rarely sell stuff (much to the wife's disgust!) but it is most helpful to know the value of items that one accumulates.
regards
Jim

Hi Guys,
Thanks to the info I got from all of you I have managed to find a pic on the AWM site of a gunner wearing a pillbox cap with the badge of the Vic Militia. His name is Edward Charles Bradshaw, Gunner, Victoria Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. The pic was taken in Melbourne c 1890. He served in the Regiment for 12 years and later served in WW1, 17944 Driver, 5 Troop, 1 Field Squadron Engineers, Australian Mounted Division. Enlisted 31/3/1917, returned to Australia in July 1919.
