Tiptaft
...these Tiptaft critters were made for the army very early in WW1 before the badge-making tools/dies were available in Oz, and as such, considered "choice"
Mine was an accidental purchase before their uniqueness was made public. Yes, I have one. No, it is not for sale! Doc B |

RE Rising Sun Badge.
G'day Malcolm
I have had a good look at your badge and it is exactly the same as one that I have which came from a relatives husband who served in WW1, I have all his badges and medals. The back of the badge has the name on it twice, once on the slider and the other on the flat section between the crown and suns rays to the left of the slider. The Tiptaft rising suns have the suns rays with all sorts of daggy bits on them, others have smooth suns rays, they are quite different to other makes. There is another thread on Tiptaft rising suns in the Aussie section under the Rising Sun heading, have a look as there are several posts on this thread. Yes yours is a good one well done. All WW1 Rising Suns are hard to find and expensive, some have sliders, some lugs and I also have one (from the same collection) that has a very long pin and has not had lugs or a slider, it is brass rather than being blackened. I hope that this helps. Regards Phil. |

Can you please explain what you mean by "before the badge-making tools/dies were available in Oz" Australians were wearing these badges from 1905 roughly and one of the main suppliers was stokes in Melbourne. They all had lugs and the slider is particular to UK made badges. There are many opinions on when the tiptaft badges were issued. There is evidence that Gaunt produced some officer’s badges pre ww1 and so can be assumed tiptaft also provided badges. However, there is a thought that the tiptaft badges didn’t start reaching the troops until 1916 when the troops found themselves in big numbers in England and France. Demand for replacement badges exceeding the delivery from Australia causing locally sourced badges eg tiptaft, gaunt BC |

Tiptaft redux
Hi there, badgecollector,
I like your comments on the rising sun badge and they make a lot more sense than did mine. I was going on supposition, not published facts. Oz "stuff" is not my strong point, but I do like the occasional one to round out the collection. Thanks again for your comments and observation. Dr B |

Hello Dave, Dr B and Phil,
Sorry for the delay in sending a 'thank you' but I have been off line for a few days, hopefully now sorted. I have found all the comments very interesting. Kind regards, Malcolm. |
