Are those "L" shaped whips (crops grow in fields)? If so properly described as hunting whips. The L piece is used for opening gates.
And rather than date the sticks can you not date the owner's service? Eddie |

Hi Wilf,
Thanks for that, a great piece of info. Would it be possible to send me a nice scan of this (to royshadbolt@me.com) along with details of the document it is in - date/title etc? Cheers, Roy

Been doing some research. The stick marked J Bell, he was lost in Korea 1953. No record found for BC Rutherford so anything after WW1 is not available to view unless they were lost. Seems to be more wear on the leather so must have survived but may be ww2 or Korea. The unmarked stick is different construction so might be older? Cheers Brian

Thanks for posting. So they had no choice... they were ordered to carry them. Would this also mean that 'regimental canes' would not have been private purchase items? Probably excruciatingly obvious, but what does 'B.R.O.' stand for? JT |

I should think BRO and DRO relates to Battalion and Divisional Routine Orders. Regards, Paul.

This picture is from 1924, showing use of the swagger stick by OR. His cap looks to be one of the early peaked Brodrick caps.

I think this picture must be from around the time. Slightly different swagger stick.

Is that stick a bit shorter than others, or perhaps at an angle to the camera? Were they of a standard/approved length, I wonder? Regards, JT |
