Unknown marksman badge
I have a marksman badge, similar to the one in this thread and identified by oc14 in post #4 as a pre 1974 Army Cadet Force .22 rifle Marksman badge but mine has a King's crown.
Does that make it a pre-1953 (ish) acf .22 rifle marksman badge? I will upload pictures tomorrow, recharging batteries at the moment. |

Luc,
Good day from a freezing Munich.. I was in the ATC during the 50's and we had a barrack room opposite the ACF barrack room (Brecon). I also 'earned' a .22 (single rifle, no crown) and later on a .303 (crossed rifles, no crown) 'marksman' badges. Neither the ones that I wore or the ones I saw being worn by the ACF cadets had crowns (I was starting to collect badges even then and I am sure I would have noticed). Even though there was a lot of rivalry, we still compared kit and badges etc. This was my experience from around 1957/58 up to around 1963. All the best, david |

Definitely ACF and definitely .22 Marksman, pre 1953. 1st class shot wore a rifle with a star, 2nd class shots wore aplain rifle.
In the Air Training Corps (ATC) a rifle with a crown was worn by Marsksman with .22 rifle, the crossedrifles were worn by those who had qualified as a markasman with the .303 rifle OC14 |

Memories
Showing my age now, but fond memories. In the School Combined Cadet Force, we got to shoot .22 once a year at a 25 yard range in a converted Nissen Hut, using converted/rebored Jungle Carbines. 20 shots; first 5 for groupage (maximum score 25); second five large target (maximum score 20); third five small target (maximum score 20); fourth five (quick fire at fluctuating exposed targets, maximum 15). A score of 45 – 62 qualified as 2nd class shot, khaki rifle; a score of 63 – 72 qualified as 1st class shot (rifle with star above); a score of 73+ as a marksman (crown above rifle). Don't think I'm too far out on my figures. .303 was fired, again once a year, at Annual Camp. Never forgetting to put your beret against the shoulder for the recall. Can't remember the tasks or scoring, just a couple of incidents, where we were told to stop firing at Shorncliffe as a radio message had been received we were over-shooting into the Channel, lol. Same pattern of badges though but on red background, plain rifle, rifle with star above, rifle with crown above. RAF cadets wore similar but with sky blue rifles and extra's. Cadet NCO's got to fire a magazine from the Bren, and bounced along forwards trying to hold the beast back. |
