Thanks Andrew.....

I saw a pair of them when I was cataloging the Colonel Sam B. Steele collection of SAC uniforms and equipment...... Also a large QVC SAC badge in brass but understand that it was rejected and only 3 were made.....

Hi Mike, It is good to know about the QVC badge. The only one I knew of in brass with QVC was the one with the red cross in the centre. In actual fact, there were no brass badges, but gilt badges. Most have long since lost there gilt, so most you find are brass today. Excluding the QVC you have seen and including the SAC medical badges there appear to be another 8 gilt helmet/cap badges. 5 are illustrated in Owen's book and 7 are illustrated in an article for the SA Medal Society. Over and above this there were various SAC titles worn on the slouch hat. Do you have a copy of Owen and the SA Medal article? Regards Andrew

Good Morning Andrew.....

Thanks for the reply..... Yes I understand that the Medical Badge was in what I will call brass but I was not sure of the of the other QVC badges..... Within a year (knock on wood) the archives here will have all of the documents, letters, diaries, official correspondence and photos of the equipment on line for all to see free of charge..... On his peaked caps he had just a red leather star with no holes made for a badge and on his other cap he had a voided brass Edward cap badge..... On close inspection of this badge it did not look as if it had been gilt at any time...... There were also two of his full uniforms...... With regards to the article, no I am afraid that I do not have a copy and the copy of Owens that I have is the very First Edition..... A lot of my information I have obtained from "No Colours, No Drums"..... One thing that I did have which I am very very sorry that I let go was one of the "Gallantry Badges"......

Mike

Hi Mike, It is a shame that you let the Gallantry Badge go. It is almost impossible to find. Regards Andrew

Hi Andrew.....

Oh I know where it is and I have first refusal to purchase it back if and when the collection goes up for sale but I think that it will cost me a little bit more than the $200.00 Cdn (1400 R at todays exchange rate) that I sold it for.... That was back in the 1980's......

Hi Will, Nice collection of SAC badges. I am particularly intersted in the QVC medical badge as medical insignia is my field of collecting. Could you post a larger picture of this badge please (both obverse and reverse). Also what is the white backing made of (leather or material) and the red cross (stiched on, painted on , etc.)

In Colin Owens book he shows 4 SAC medical badges, but I believe item #1846 (QVC white metal) may be a made up badge. I have seen this item first hand and the enameled disc was brass and had been fitted into the white metal badge. The gilt version (#1847 KC) is very impressive.

Regards
Steven

Thanks Mike,
I have seen this one on numerous occasions and mostly without the red enamel. It may be that Owens version (with enamel) is actually red enamel paint added by 'someone' at some point in the badges lifetime.

Regards
Steven

Default SAC badges

I have included my collection, I am continually amazed at the amount of different SAC badges there are. Does anyone have any doc's on them? I have also included a 'Orange River Colony Police' badge of the same era, were there more of them?
