Military Police
Hoping for some advice as I try to add some commonwealth MP badges to my collection. Really haven't got much info on what I should be looking for.
What I have is Zimbabwe MP. Type with MP over "Zimbabwe" with "Exemplo Ducemus" at the base and the bird at the top. Am I correct in thinking there are two others, one with the crown and one with the bird, with "Rhodesia" and "MIlitary Police" on the scrools. Also a shoulder title "RhMP" Is there anything else ? For South Africa, I have the type with the hand holding the scales in Bronze with the collar dogs, and also the type with the sword in the centre, but in silver (officers ?) with matching collar dogs. Does this second type also exist in brass and what should I be looking for as far as shoulder titles are concerned? Grateful for any advice. |

Hi ProCoy, Welcome to the Forum. Another forum member from Canada, John Cameron has an excellent site for the various incarnations of the Canadian Military Police.

Thanks Bill !
Its an awesome site. Drooling over some of these early Canadian Military Police badges. I only have the Canadian badges from WW2 onwards. Never seen any of the early ones for sale over here and from web seraches it seems that one or two for sale over in Canada are very expensive. Still, having just paid over £1300 for a WW1 Prussian military police Gorget, I suppose these badges seem cheap by comparison ! |

Hi ProCoy
Yes, the MP badge is also found in brass, voided & unvoided. Sorry, but I don't know much else about them. Cheers, Alex |

Hi, you can look at http://home.mweb.co.za/re/redcap . This should cover most of your questions regarding the South African MP's. Regards Andrew

Many thanks guys.
Thanks Andrew for the really useful site link. Coincidentally, just after asking, I found a Brass 1957 type badge on EBay quite cheap. Are the 1935 type badges being faked ? I ask because I have a cap badge and pair of collar dogs. The Cap badge is cast brass, and the collar dogs in Bronze. The thing that concerned me was the relatively low quality of the cap badge compared to the collar dogs. Had these for around 30 years so if they are bad, they certainly aren't recent copies. |

The cast badge is likely a WW2 North African badge. Supplies were low and many of the South African badges were done in sand castings in North Africa. The SA WW2 badges are generally cheap, so I do not think it will be a fake. Regards Andrew
