The "EGYPT" may have been scrubbed from the tablet by the look of it?
I'm not sure though it looks very much as if it has.

I get the same impression Leigh, there seems to be a little bit of swarf at the end of the plinth which adds to my concern. Jim.

The badge seems smaller than normal and a bit on the crude side, but I would stop short of calling it fake. The plinth does not appear to have been erased after manufacture as the finish is the same as the rest of the badge.

I think that it's possible to make out five "blobs" that would coincide with an erased "EGYPT", the finish, such as it is and whatever it is, could've been reapplied, or be a brush over of boot polish, whatever.
I'm always very loath to give opinions as to whether a badge is genuine or not, prefering to leave such decisions to persons more expert than I, but unless this is a known manufacturer's variation of an altered die or is accepted as a 'field conversion" I wouldn't have it, it looks like a ringer to me.

C.B, the badge measures 51mm x 51mm star to star...the circle measures 28mm. It has a good heavy feel to it....Jim

I have tried to rub off the finish on the plinth without success, its not boot polish or coffee, it is consistent with the rest of the patina on both the front and back. Jim.

The plinth isn't smooth, it has five raised areas, to me, it looks as if EGYPT has been erased, from the die or from the actual badge, during manufacture or after, I don't know.

I think it is an original badge with erased plinth, whether to deceive or because the wearer didn't have an option we will never know.
