Grenadier Guards kilmarnock question?
Greetings all,
Am wondering if someone can confirm Crimean campaign period GG kilmarnock color? Doctor Google seems to be stumped by that one 😉

Mark, if you mean "Kilmarnock Cap" they didn't wear one.

Mark, in the field (Crimea included) the undress cap of the Foot Guards was the Albert Bonnet, which was a tall version of what we now think of as a Torin cap. In barracks they wore a tall and well set up forage cap tilted slightly to the side of the head and held in that position by the chin strap worn down. In the two decades previous the latter cap had borne a peak, but after around 1852 only the battalion staff sergeants retained this feature, along with the gold lace band worn by all SNCOs. The Guards always had their own special patterns of head dress, just as today, and wore neither a ‘Kilmarnock’, nor a ‘Brodrick’, but something visually similar, but better ‘set up’ and thus more expensive.

That’s a superb image Mark, and shows both types of undress cap worn by the Foot Guards.
