Default Army Service Corps Image 1905

Here is a photo of a number of ASC Sgt's in Full Dress Uniforms in a group prior to a Sunday church service in Aldershot, it's post marked 1905.

Typical of the period these men are wearing a mixed number of QVC crowns in both their helmets and rank badges and on closer observations you will see their full dress trade badges in wear, some white cross belts and differing belt buckles. A really great photo in my opinion.

It also shows a lot of service history between them all and the "Tashes" make the image of all these very proud men an important part of our history.

I have shown a couple of closer images of the photo;

Ken,

Re the QMS, front row, next to the end on the left:-

Whats the badge above his inverted 4 bar chevrons?

I assumed it would be Hammer & Pincers but just cant see that in its outline.

regards

Great photo showing SNCOs rating as regimental ‘staff’. The three most senior men wear pouch belts and Slade-Wallace waist belts with ‘union lockets’ and first class tunics with a line of gold piping under their collars. These QMS are 1st Class. The 2nd Class QMS have snake clasp waist belts with gold lace trefoil knots the same as the 1st Class but no pouch belts and no line of gold piping underlining the collar. The remainder appear to be mainly 3rd Class staff.

Great observations Toby.
I can see all the points you raise now.

Didnt appreciate that the Crown over 3 Chevrons indicated a QMS also at that time and didnt know there were 3 Classes.

Cracking images Ken. Just out of interest with reference the Blue cloth helmet. Should it be worn with the curb chain on the chin ?

It is necessary to examine the list of appointments in the QRs and Pay Warrants Mike. I did not mean QMS of 3rd Class, but other specialist appointments. Sqn Sgt Majs of that time wore 3 stripes with crown over, as did Sqn QMS. All these different levels were broken down in groups in QRs, only the 1st Class QMS had both gold piped cuff knots and a line below the collar. The most senior ranks, warrant officers and not seen in the photo, also had gold lace framing their white collars.

The other formal position for it Andy, was up and draped diagonally across the front and hooked up. It is often seen in that alternative position.
