Default Patches of the RCAF O.F.U. (Overseas Ferry Unit)

A special unit of Air Transport Command (ATC) within the RCAF was created known as the No. 1 Operational Ferry Unit or O.F.U. It was in existence a relatively short time from Oct. 1953 to June 1957 but during this period they successfully transferred newer models of the Sabre and T33 trainers as well repatriating some of the older model Sabre 2’s and later, Sabre 5’s.

Historically, aircrews would often privately purchase patches for their flight suits or jackets. These patches would not only identify and distinguish their owners and unit but were seen as symbols of pride in their role and organization. Those associated with the OFU were no exception and although originals are rare, two styles of period patches are associated with this unit. The later pattern was replicated, on material with a white background and a perimeter of heavy black stitching but the latter was produced well after the OFU was disbanded. Both original examples (made by Crest Craft) illustrated here are very uncommon.

Identical patches once worn by RCAF pilot Ralph Annis and now held in the New Brunswick Aviation Museum, are also attached. And below, is an image of Chick Childerhose from his book, Wild Blue wearing one of these patches.

A future, more detailed article in the MCCoC may be published in the future.
