Default Norfolk Yeomanry

Norfolk Yeomanry 1936-1953, is it an original?

Your thoughts please?

Rob

Hi Rob
I think we have lost a lot of our experts over the last two years or so.
The banter has gone, we have to be very careful what we say as some members get their nickers in a knot, it has become too clinical. Its a shame, we have had some very knowledgeable members leave the forum and taken their advice with them. I hope you get a reply regarding your badge.
Terry

Default Norfolk Yeomanry query

Terry,

Of course you are spot on with your theory that many knowledgeable members have left the forum. Someone I know has an identical badge which he says is a fake, I am not sure and the last thing I want to do is offer dud badges on the forum.

Hi Rob
Does you friend say why he thinks it a fake? Is there anything that points in that direction?

You may not remember, but back in March 16 I believe you commented on a thread and made an opinion that the badge with loops was not a cap badge but possibly worn on the shoulder chains. Alan O backed this up.

I'm not expressing an opinion, but just what was previously discussed.

Cool Norfolk Yeomanry

Mark,

Yes, these large badges were worn on the chains I believe, very difficult to say whether this one was worn as a chain device or a cap badge.

I think by the very design of these badges that sliders would be easily broken and I have only seen loops on the GviR variety. I would be happy to see one with a slider.

My friend has a similar badge which is in mint condition, I think this could be where the idea came from that it's a fake. I have got and had badges that were made and never issued, sold off as surplus and remained in that condition, however, I put this badge up just to get other opinions which I welcome.

Regards Rob

Hi rob, the copies of this this badge are petty good , even the colour has a nice shine to it , which is why so many become real. As far as I know there is not one point to look for, so there all original sadly.

Default Original?

Andrew,
Many thanks for your comment, as you say there are no real pointers as to the originality of these badges, I have one which I bought in 1965 and it's the same more or less apart from slight patina.

Have you ever seen one with a vertical shank?

I think the GvR variety have one, but as I said in an earlier post the spec may have changed.

Rob

I have one with a shank that I have had for a long time. It was called into question a while back and became the subject of this thread

Hi Rob
I didn't comment earlier because I really am no expert and couldn't say for sure, but my initial thought was that this was a repro. Firstly because of the yellow sheen to the brass though that may just be the photo so I couldn't be sure, and secondly I didn't like the lugs with the feet on them. Neither is conclusive, just my opinion.
Cheers,
Alex

Well it's not an original ORs cap badge which should be like Andy's. Whether it's an officer's badge with that gilt finish or something else is another matter.

As an aside the Norfolk Yeomanry had become RA Bty after merging with the Suffolks, wearing RA collar, s/t and arm badges, after WW1. They only became a full sized regt again in 1939.

The Norfolk and Suffolk Yeo website has a single photo between the wars where they are almost certainly wearing the Norfolk yeo cap badge with RA badges on their tunics.

Default Norfolk Yeomanry

Of course as you say Alan, it could well be made to wear on the chains which would mean there would be two for every cap badge issued.

I think I will keep it as a curiosity until more is found out.

Many thanks for your thoughts.

I was going to say the badge is ok to me, but i reckon someone might say no due to the dustbin lid lugs.
