Default 46 Cdo BD on Ebay

I see a "WW2" 46 RM Cdo battledress has been listed on ebay, you will note whilst the 'Royal Marines' cash tape is correct, the '46' and the 'Commando' cash tapes look like reproductions.

The bids keep coming in:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WW2-Battle...16.m2518.l4276

Original BD £80
Original Stripes £20
Original RM Tape £5
Repro 46 & Cdo £10
Sum of the parts £115

In fairness though his 44 dated Cdo beret looks nice

One has to ask how a Royal Marines BD and beret came to be found in a Dutch attic or am I missing something?

The 'commando' is definitely a reproduction, I'm less certain that the '46' is wrong, colour and size look OK, but the embroidery?

The beret is interesting, only ever seen one picture of a plastic cap badge being worn in a commando unit - rare thing.

The 46 looks like an untrimmed 13mm reproduction to me - compared to the 17mm originals.

There were 150,000 WW2 economy RM Cap badges made by Alfred Stanley and son between 18.6.45 and 3.8.45. Collar badges - strangely 50,000 noted (may be pairs?) again Alfred Stanley and son 18.6.45 - Not popular with many veterans so possibly not as commonly seen as they could be.

I hope this is helpful

The 46 is the common narrow tape copy not the correct 5/8" width. Apart from width, the giveaway is the digits are too narrow and far too close together. See original attached for comparison.

You do see these small size titles knocking around and I'm fairly convinced some of them were actually made by cash, question is when and why?

Agree the beret is a nice wartime beret as is the badge, whether they have always been together though is another matter.

It certainly makes me think the prices so often being sought for plastic RM badges are more than just a little on the high side!

£700 for a tatty BD and reproduction insignia!
And guess what? Returns aren't accepted...
I think I'm starting to see the attraction. I might start making them myself :

Just a warning that this one is back after the original buyer sensibly didn't pay.
I notice he's toned his description down but doesn't go as far as pointing out the insignia is repro...
