Steve,
I think this is a WWI St John Ambulance Brigade Hospital Train sleeve badge.
Badges of the same design in silver bullion and white thread, both on black backgrounds were worn with different letters below the wheels. The letters I have, or am aware of are M (Masseur/ Masseuse), N (Nurse) and X (X-Ray/Radiographer.
I'm not aware of a badge of this type being worn on the cap but the design has been worn on the sleeve.
A nice badge.
George

Not that I am an expert on the subject, but I have some familiarity with SJAB badges and am unaware of any such as these.
I would certainly be interested to see other similar examples.

I also collect SJA badges and have not seen that one before, but if it right, a very nice find!!! And one to look for!

Would love to see a picture and any of the patches as well.

Lovely thank you, great badge in bullion !

I think one for us all to be aware that if a badge is unknown it is not always a cobbled together fantasy piece and shouldn't always be dismissed.

Thank you for pinning this one down and thank you for everyone's contributions to the thread,an interesting result and one I had not heard of.

If you look at the rear it also has a reinforced area between the two tyres, even this is very well done.

Very pleased to have found this one !!
Thanks all
Steve

Steve , I can't guarantee my "guess" is 100% correct as I can't find verifiable evidence.

The design immediately reminded me of the later WW2 Red Cross "penny-a-week fund" badges.

...lol I thought it was possibly railway related when I found it. The problem always is locating information on the more obscure insignia. But very nice bullion badge.
Best wishes
Steve

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! I guess the design did exist. A rather rare badge I would say.

I aslo checked the "Friends Ambulance Unit" , they took over the running of a few of the overseas Ambulance/Hospital trains from the St.John Ambulance Brigade but no luck.

George (conservator) has said he has seen the cloth patches with letters below the wheels indicating different staff , N for Nursing , X for X-Ray (Radiographer) and M for Masseur/ Masseuse (or possibly Medical Officer ?) . As there were very limited numbers of these staff on the original (overseas) trains , how many of these badges/patches would have been produced ?

The "overlapping circles" insignia was also used on early 1920's Railways "First Aid" exam medallions.
