Welsh (Welch) Pals???
I've had this all Gm Welch Regiment badge for quite some time and it has always been a mystery? Having now viewed Brookies Album "The Welch (16th & 11th Battalions) Regiment" could it be and example of the 16th "City of Cardiff" Battalion badge which he mentions?
I am not at all put off by its bright appearance as it has clearly been unissued! Andy |

Hi Andy,
I would be interested in seeing the back of Brookie's badge. I have a similar badge to yours, and Brookie's, but with a slightly narrower slider. Cheers, Tinto |

So's mine and the two others I know of that have provenance as coming with the collar badges from the family. As much as that can be relied upon after the passage of time.

Your going to have to educate me here gentleman. What's the difference between the one shown above for the "Pals" and this one. Is it the finish only being so bright.

Hi Simon,
Your badge is "Welsh" where Andy's is "Welch" ?

Hi Andy
Been after one of these for a while. Basically as a "just in case it turns out as a Pals badge" investment. Kevin is the oracle on this subject, but it's certainly an ongoing line of enquiry with a couple of people. Perhaps a long shot? Please be good enough to let me know if you decide to list it! I am travelling at the moment, but do have internet access on and off. Simon - it's the spelling. Regards Neil |

Ah, I got it. I thought there was something I was not seeing. That's a bummer really, as I had one of these in my hands with what seemed a perfect slider. But I got rid of it as I knew that the econs were 1916-19, and I read they changed there name after the war......
Cheers mate. Simon. |

Is someone saying that WELCH was used during the war?

It seems it could have been (?) as a "one off" for this particular Bn, although the info supplied by Brookies appears to be not quite accurate with regards to the 1st 1000 being given to those joining the Bn.
Neil the badge is not for sale and I shall be keeping it for my own collection. I am happy with the construction and quality, just need to varify it is a right one! Best regards Andy |

The comment re the first 1000 (although maybe a generalisation) being given/supplied by the Lord Mayor of Cardiff came from a conversation with Bryn Owen who at the time had four of them in his office all on loops.

Welch was used by the Regiment throughout the Victorian era at certain times and is also to be found on QV issue buttons.
In addition it is documented as in use for more than one service battalion in the Great War as a shoulder title. |

I have the same notes as Bryn had, literally, and there is no confirmation of this. I also have access to the Regimental Museum badges coming up from Cardiff to Brecon and have not yet seen these. However, I do believe that there was a one piece C spelling badge worn . |
