43rd Monmouthshire LI silver NCO's badge
Hi all,
A recent pick up that I had not seen before. I believe it to be a pre-1881 43rd (Monmouthshire Light Infantry) cast silver NCO's badge. It has round loops to the bugle ribbons unlike the square shaped ones of the glangarry badge shown in K&K 493. It measures 40x37mm and has silver loops north-south.. I know that often there are post-1881 badges with pre-Cardwell reform numbers so maybe it is later. I have been unable to find pictures of a similar badge in my reference books so would like to hear if members can assit with a more precise identification. All the best, Dean. |

Hi Dean
What an interesting and excellent "find". I would say the size and "look" of it suggests an Officer's Forage cap or Glengarry badge circa 1860 to 1881, altho' forage cap badges at this period were usually embroidered. A pity it is not hallmarked. According to my notes, the 43rd were in NZ from 1863 to 1866 (tho' not in Australia), so it might be worth your while to investigate its provenance starting from who and where you puchased it. Regards. Jeff PS: The fact that it has lugs and not screw fixings to my mind rules out a post 1881 bandsman's pouch ornament. PPS: Would be interested to know how you identified this as an NCOs badge, but if it is I suppose it could belong to a PP cap, but whatever it is, I think its a "good-un" so hang on to it ! Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your most informative post. I am happy with the badge as a forage cap badge which I should be able to find a picture of with a little more research. I sourced it privately in the UK and sorry I should have noted that as that is where the lead came from as a senior NCO's badge as that was how it was described to me. It reminded me very much of the silver 13th badge in my infantry variant album which is very similar. I really like this type of badge. I tend to get in less bother compared with when I stray to cavalry and yeomanry! All the best and thanks again, Dean. |
