Gents,

I have a feeling this man might be wearing the so-called 'leather football' type buttons, as opposed to Rifles stringed buglehorn buttons. I have a couple of pictures of troops wearing these - will post when able.

Looks also as though the soft trench cap with rows of stitching to the peak, is being worn. Issued mid-1916 or 1917(?)

Regards,

JT

2nd man from rt rear rank, as viewed, appears to be wearing a rifle sling as a belt so the must have been in very short supply.

That's actually the webbing version of the Pattern 1903 belt (as I think someone mentioned earlier), as per:

Pattern 1903 belts

Another new purchase with "Devonshires" penciled on to the back.

But again I suspect ASC, the badge is odd though in that it appears to be shaded on the sides?

As always all thoughts an observations welcome.

Rob, having returned to this post several times and studied the badge over and over again, I am finally of the opinion that it is the Devonshire Regiment. The star is more squared up than the ASC one and the crown sits higher than the crown on the ASC badge. Comparing the two, the ASC badge appears more squat and broader than the Devons. Hope this makes sense.

Hi Hoot, thanks for taking the time to look at this for me.

I do see your point about shape, the trouble is that Devon badges vary a lot, I only have the one ASC badge but I suspect there will be variations in them also.

The big difference appears to be the size of the crown in proportion to the rest of the badge, and I do feel its quite big in this photo which makes me think ASC?

Regards Rob

Rob, the size of the crown was the main reason it took me so long to reach a conclusion. I agree with you that it looks too large for the Devons but I put that down to the blurred outline of the badge in general. It's certainly a tricky one anyway.

I agree its tricky and I'm in no way sure. There are very few other clues except for the lanyard, I wonder if that helps?

Rob, the ASC certainly wore those white lanyards as did many other units. I think they were also a private purchase option in a lot of cases.
