Hi Yorkstone,
HMP Stafford was opened in 1794 so yes a button would have existed with some form of title on it.
Hwyl,
Bantam

Default Prison buttons

A button for Stafford prison almost certainly exists somewhere but I have not seen one. All the named local prison buttons were issued before 1878 when their management was transferred from the local magistrates in each county to the Home Office. It is likely that the title would have been "STAFFORD COUNTY GAOL", as with other counties and the design would probably have been either a crown and / or the Staffordshire knot, so they would have broadly resembled the early Staffordshire Constabulary buttons.

I've not seen a button for Stafford Prison. But, I do have one for Stafford Borough Police. That force existed between 1840 and 1858. Their initial strength was 4 men and their final strength was 5 men.

Dave.

Hi

Does anyone know of, or could show examples of, early Scottish Prison buttons? The earliest I have is a brass "H.M. Prison Service Scotland", KC fronting the saltire.

Thanks

Graham

Thank you for the photos Bantam, much appreciated. So it has been Her (or His) Majesty's Prison Service Scotland since at least the reign of Victoria.

I'm guessing no-one is aware of earlier buttons for individual jails?

All the best

Graham

Hi Chacal,
Never seen any earlier buttons to Scotland other then Victorian as I've posted.Trying to find early badges is just as difficult from the 30's up to the last pattern.
Regards,
Bantam
