Officers badges with sliders
This has been an often asked question as to whether officers badges were made with sliders on this forum, with the usual answer that sliders were issued to other ranks.
On receiving my latest Bosley Postal catalogue today I notice that lot 456 Cambridgeshire Regt Officer's cap badge, die cast, silver plated, by J.R. Gaunt, London, has a slider. this badge is attributed to the Hugh King collection. My next question to forum members: Does anyone have in their collection an officers badge with a slider? How many times have we passed over an Officer's quality badge with a slider because we think "it's not right"? Your thoughts forum members . . ! Rob |

sliders
Thank you for your comments chaps, I have no doubts that some genuine Officers badges had sliders, although I don't think I have any in my collection.

They do exist but are few and far between and to a smal list of Regiments and Corps! Most that are seen for sale as "slidered officers badges" are often Birmingham Mint items!
Here's a RAMC slidered badge I picked up a short while ago! The slider is quite different to that found on ORs badges, which often (not always) is the case! Andy |

I do know that there was a DWR officers cap badge with a slider. And how do I know you may ask. I worked as a lad at COD Bicester in shed D2 where the badges were stored and have one that I got off the shelf as surplus stock during a stocktake and reconcilliation job. I also recall a Lancs officers being made with a slider.

Yes, I have one of the later (officers only) patterns to the 12th London Rangers.

I collect mainly to the RAOC, and have examples of Bronzed WWII 1918 Pattern RAOC Badges, which were sold by the RAOC Officers Shop to new officers and as replacements, they look like OR's badges that probably got bronzed in the workshops, and I was told this was a common wartime economy.
P.S. I also worked in D2 at Graven Hill at Bicester but you could not get past the civilian she devils who worked in the detail bins! It was a collectors paradise with small cardboard boxes of each cap badge (Issued Officers & Other Ranks) with a label and full Part Number and Description of each badge on the front, they used to have a sample badge, but they were removed as being to much of a temptation and easy to grab on a walkby (not by be me of course as I worked in section CD not CB) Last edited by Mike_2817; 20-01-15 at 11:14 PM. |

Another known example on a slider is the Yorkshire Volunteers Officers enamel cap badge

I bought an officers slivered DWR cap badge from the PRI at Endcliffe Hall in Sheffield in 1997.

Matti,
At that point they were "All Ranks" badges, soldiers wearing them in the beret but officers still wearing bullion embroidered badges. Andy |
