Default Maker Marked Queen's Crown Era Cap Badges - Good, Fake or Collector's Market Items

Hello All

Years ago when I was picking up any badge I could lay my hands on I bought quite a few QC era metal badges. About half had maker's marks and the rest had blank sliders. Although a lot of these are very well made the maker's mark does not always reconcile with the era the badge was in use plus a lot of these units would have had anodised aluminium badges as standard issue. I am aware a lot of badges were made for the collector's market and had maker's names stamped into them but I am at a loss deciding what may be good, what may be fake and what is Collector's Market items (which I would also class as wrong). I have now decided to have a clear out and will only keep those badges that had a strong chance of being worn by the units. The rest will be moved on.

I have listed below some of the Maker Marked badges I have and would appreciate if the modern era badge boffins could tell me which are good and which are bad. Happy to post pictures if required and may even compile a temporary album to show front and back pictures.

Many thanks in advance

Paddy

East Surrey Regt beret badge QC - JR Gaunt London - Correct but also widely restruck.
King's Own Royal Border Regt QC - JR Gaunt B'Ham - Only ever issued in a/a
Border Regt QC - JR Gaunt B'Ham - The design was worn but also widely restruck with Gaunt London sliders. Bham is questionable but could be right.

QARANC QC - JR Gaunt London - Correct
Royal Army Dental Corps QC - JR Gaunt London - Correct
Royal Army Pay Corps beret badge QC - JR Gaunt London - Correct
Army Catering Corps QC 1st pattern - JR Gaunt London - Correct - but yours is the 2nd Q/C pattern with scroll and not a genuine cap badge.
Royal Hampshire Regt QC - JR Gaunt B'Ham - Only issued in a/a but could have been bought and worn.
Bays QC - JR Gaunt London - Open to question as contemporary records say that on disbandment they wore k/c or Q/C a/a - however at least one forum member has one he got from regtl sources in brass with q/c.
Glider Pilot Regt QC - JR Gaunt B'Ham - No
Royal Monmouthshire Engineers QC - JR Gaunt London Ltd - Possibly a private purchase items as the mark is 1990s and the issued ones were in a/a
8th King's Royal Irish Hussars QC - JR Gaunt London Ltd - No. Not worn or issued.
Green Howards 1950-58 - JR Gaunt B'Ham - Unlikely to be correct.
Royal Artillery QC beret badge - JR Gaunt London - Correct
Green Jackets QC - Firmin London - Issued in a/a only
16th/5th Queen's Lancers QC - Firmin London - Issued in a/a only but could be PRI buy.
Light Infantry (Bright Metal) - Firmin London - Correct last issue before amalgamation
Royal Corps of Transport - Firmin London - Would have to see a picture
Royal Pioneer Corps 2nd pattern - Firmin London - only issued in a/a
Army Catering Corps 2nd pattern, lugs - Firmin - Would have to see a picture
Royal Welsh Fusiliers - Firmin - Unlikely as when Firmin were making badges they only issued in a/a so would have to see a picture
Life Guards - Firmin - Would have to see a picture

These are my thoughts and I would recommend posting a picture before disposing of any.

These notes dated 1980 explain the fakery that was done with Gaunt London sliders on restrikes of the Q/C 1950s badge patterns.

Your ACC is last pattern with scroll and is not a issued cap badge which were made in a/a with sliders.

8th King's Royal Irish Hussars QC

Even though the 8th didn't amalgamate till 1958 I'm pretty certain that they never wore QC hat badges. They were the King's Royal Irish Hussars after all! I have had quite a lot of verbal anecdotal evidence to back this up. Officer's badges do exist with the QC and were worn but as far as I can establish ORs never wore the QC version.

So as far as I'm concerned all OR QC hat badges for the 8th KRIH are iffy.

I'm sure one of the 8th Hussar experts will comment on this.
