Default Georgian pewter button

Found in a field pewter button. Looks early by the shank and belonging to a regiment. Difficult to photograph but looks like 59 or 69. Looks like it has a decorative outer rim. No backstamp is visible.

Hello Martin

To me, it looks like a '59' and Parkyn illustrates an early other ranks pewter button for the 59th that looks just the same - "design in relief of '59'. The button had a roped rim".

Although your button is well worn it would seem to fit that description.

Many thanks. Would this date to c:1780 - 1790 ish? Or slightly later.

Regards

Hello Martyn

Parkyn does not give a date, just says "early". These early buttons are difficult to date accurately but I would think pre 1800 certainly.

May thanks. I know it's not very clear unfortunately. I've looked at it many times and still can't make my mind up.

The design itself is not an unusual one for British infantry regiment buttons of that period so it could be a 39, 59, 69 or possibly several others.

Many thanks Roger

I looked on the database of early buttons and found several possibilities myself. As you said, a common type.

Many thanks for that. It was difficult to decide.
