I have these two S.A. Commando badges which I know very little about, could anyone help me with the dates they were worn and any other details.

Thanks in advance.

Rob,
The two Kommando badges are cap badges worn by the Skiet Kommando equivalent to the British Territorial service units. They are a direct descendant of the Kommando forces serving in the Boer War.

The first one you show is earlier worn 1954 to 1963
The second one (UNITAS) was worn from 1963 to c. 1975 in GM and from 1975 in chrome. A smaller (collar size) badge in chrome is worn on the beret with a green/orange/green balkie.

Sometime in the late 80's, early 90's a lot of these territorial units aquired there own unique beret badges are are quite collectable and hard to find.

With the new government coming to power these units were fased out and eventually disbanded.

Smile S.A. Commando

Steven,

Many thanks for this informative reply, although I have several South African badges I am not very knowledgeable on the subject, your reply has been very informative as I have a pair of "UNITAS" collars in G/m as well as a chromed one which is the same as a cap badge and worn in the beret.

Regards Rob

You may wish to check these "badge cards" if you need more info on SA badges. They were created by self as an effort to catalogue my own collection, therefore are not a complete reference. There are a few errors in spelling etc. Link to albums in this group - http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...p?albumid=2704
