I may break this down later but I'm just after an indication of how important a maker was to the manufacturing trade on the basis of what the maker actually produced. The London and Birmingham bit as far as I can see relates to center of administration only and not manufacture. I have spend countless hours trying to find out where anodised aluminium cap badges by Gaunt were made in London and have come up with nothing. If anyone knows different then please let me know with dates and location. As such, m belief at this stage is that the change in mark from London to Birmingham reflects change in center of administration only and has nothing to do with manufacture. Regards Chris |

Chris, here is the only one I have.
JR Gaunt London King's (Liverpool), 38 x 38mm, seeded scroll. I'm not certain of date yet but I don't think it was ready for the regulars before amalgamation with the Manchesters in 1958. This will have been used therefore by the 5th Bn up to 1967. Some examples may have found their way to the LU OTC also before their own version (not Gaunt) was sealed in 1971. Slider was manufactured in one place, badge in the other.Left over stock of one part when the factories merged.
Besides the oddity,a brass slidered badge is a good find.I think the Gaunt brass sliders make a stronger badge fixing than the Grove type of brass slider fitting. |
