Enterprising F/Sgt
The attached shows the progression of rank slides intended for wear on the blue shirt epaulettes when introduced and adopted some time in the 70s. These refer to Flight Sgt rank.
Large slide with a rough-and-ready crown and chevrons fashioned from white tape and individually sewn. This was followed by a more professional and official look, albeit presumably still a stop-gap measure. Small slide with applique tape rank device. Note the shapes of this and the previous crowns) The final and official version. Machine woven crown (St Edwards) and chevrons. All three presumably sanctioned, as were worn. GTB |

Somewhere I have a Corporal's rank slide similar to the centre one: I'll post a photo when it turns up.

It was quite common for white tape to be used in the army onto shirts for 'shirt sleeve order' including the stylised crown. The unit tailor would make them up on backing cloth in rolls ready to issue.
