In retrospect, you could well be right. I also have this ATS ORs badge that I know for a fact was in the ground, because that's where I found it. Also this Royal Sussex which I always assumed was a 'bronzed' badge, but on re inspection, the back definitely exhibits signs of having been in the ground....but those East Surrey badges dammit! They just look and feel so much like they've been painted up....like yesterday to be honest! Mike

Here is an example of a BM East Surrey Regiment cap badge. At first glance it appears to be bronzed but is in fact just extremely dirty. I had a similar Sherwood Forester's cap badge which on cleaning proved to be a standard BM badge.
