Good afternoon

I posted a similar button not long ago without the garter. I've no idea what it is unfortunately but it's nice to see a similar one.

An identical button with the same backmark is in the National Maritime Museum. It is 'unknown'.

Although the museum can be contacted with updates and queries on their objects, it is useless to contact them.
You will get one of a few canned responses (see below) and your submission will never be processed.

-----

Thank you for your submission to the National Maritime Museum.

Kindest regards,
The National Maritime Museum Team

-----

Thank you for contacting Royal Museums Greenwich. Your enquiry has now been passed to the relevant specialist for consideration.

We welcome enquiries about particular artefacts in our collections which you may have seen in a publication, in our galleries or exhibitions, or which you may have missed on a visit; you may have a comment or additional information about something you have seen on our website? If your enquiry falls into one of these categories, we aim to reply within 20 working days from the date of receipt.

If your enquiry is not about an item in our collection it will still be reviewed by our specialists in case they can assist you briefly with your research in some way. However, we regret that owing to limited resources and the high number of enquiries we receive we are usually unable to respond to general enquiries about maritime or astronomical history, or about privately owned objects. If this applies to your enquiry please note that you may not receive a further response from us but you may find some of the suggestions below helpful:

If you are able to visit us we have an extensive collection of books and journals available at the Caird Library for personal research, including free on-site access to ancestry.com. The public opening hours are:

Monday – Friday: 10.00 – 16.45
Saturday: 10.00 – 13.00; 14.00 – 16.45

You can register for a reader’s ticket, search for and pre-order books ahead of your visit to the Library by using the Aeon system, the web address for this is: www.rmg.co.uk/aeon

The Museum has created a number of research guides around popular subjects, which may assist you in finding out more information about your area of interest. These can be found at:
http://www.rmg.co.uk/researchers/lib...search-guides/

If your enquiry relates to astronomy you may find this link helpful:
http://www.rmg.co.uk/contact/astronomy

The collections of the Museum can be also be searched and viewed online using our online catalogues at the following link:

With the inclusion of the Garter motto and the Royal Crown I just wonder whether this button could be a precursor of the Royal Yacht Squadron buttons??

Hello GTB

A good call and if not an early Royal Yacht Squadron button then very likely a Yacht Club button. The Royal St George's Yacht Club buttons use a similar crown on anchor device (as opposed to a crown over anchor) but within a circlet containing the title of the club. Not a huge leap to substitute the garter and motto.

I agree.
The collection of the late Arthur Mace had several early R.Y.S. buttons. One had the same design, but in a band was the text "Wanderer, R.Y.S."

Queen Victoria's coronation year was 1837. The crown is definitely her's so perhaps Garter and Crown could signify Royal patronage. Furthermore, 1837 is the backmark date - so perhaps a Coronation-linked button for the RYS?
