Thanks for the instructions Mike.
Gavin,

I truly hate to say this, mate, a minefield indeed... only wing 12 and 17 look authentic to me. Please talk to your badge dealer and claim your money back.

Cheers,

Johan

Sadly I have to agree, the 1st SAS title is also not right.

Jack.

Yes there are a few which I know aren't right, more of interest than anything else. 17 was issued to me so yes that's original, but I collected them as personal interest only and not as someone trying to resale.

Default Wings

Hi Gsvin,

That is quite OK. I would just hate to see a fellow collector being ripped off by a badge dealer.

Wing 12 is Rhodesian.

I could possibly get you some period originals if you are interested, not WW2 sadly..

Cheers,

Johan

Hi Gavin,

You are in good hands with Johan, his help has been invaluable to me in learning about original SAS insignia. With his assistance and that of others on this forum such as JB (Hamandjam) and Jack (JDR) I have been able to confidently put together a collection of original SAS insignia which I would not have otherwise been able to do.

There are other members who have also helped along the way from time to time which all adds up to gaining the necessary knowledge to identify and purchase original items with confidence when they become available. I find most of the time you have to make quick decisions due to competition from other collectors for sought after items, so having the knowledge is vital to avoid buyers regret.

I think we all have a box of bits that we purchased before gaining more knowledge. When you acquire more original pieces over time you can compare them to the ones you have shown here. The reproductions are mostly obvious when compared to originals.

It is a minefield which has been said earlier, but with guidance from the good guys on here to help us through, it is worth it, as it is a fascinating subject with many variations of insignia.

Good luck,

Jack

Thanks Jack. I'm not really a collector but I have picked up quite a bit over the years. I've been lucky enough to met over 150 ww2 sas, sbs, lrdg lads at various events I've attended. If I like something and the price is ok I'll have a flutter. I'm currently putting together 2 ww2 uniforms for my local heritage centre as a educational theme and hopefully keep the military collecting and enthusiasm going into the next generation. I've picked 1st Airlanding light regt RA for the Arnhem period and SAS Europe, so far I have managed to keep everything original, this sits along side my own personal artifacts from conflicts over the years. It will be a good exhibition.

At $300 the wings are not cheap at all.
Good luck Gavin with the display pal.
Regards
Jon

I'll be listing on eBay shortly a 1944 SAS wing, a spare from my collection, guaranteed genuine, for those who are interested. I'll post photos here, and let you know when the listing is up.

Best wishes,
Donovan

P.S. The listing is posted on eBay US, item # 222065857718. See photos under the Classified/For Sale section of the Forum.

P.S.S. The only way I could get rid of the exorbitant international shipping charge of $48 that eBay automatically added to the listing was to end the listing, opt out of the Global Shipping Program, and then re-list the wing. I'll do so shortly.

Is anyone familiar with any of these type of SAS wings with some kind of pin on the back?

Some of my WW2 examples have pins on the rear. Others have press studs.

It is a genuine wing. Modern though. Any time from roughly 1970's to recently.
