Default Hallmarks

Is there a hard and fast rule as to where the HM is placed or is it done ad hoc for each example of a badge ?
The reason i ask is,my GJ brigade badge came today .The HM is on the crown (Bham 1964) below the JRG&S mark. But above the JR Gaunt London mark.
Fellow forum member Billy, his example the HM is on the bottom of the lower arm of the cross. The Gaunt London mark is in the same place.

Makers marks are done by the badge makers, hallmarks are done by the assay office and they seem to place then wherever they want including on the front!

Mike .... that will be a first strike from a new die.... the J.R.GAUNT LONDON mark is in the male die. You should also find the first AA from that die with the same mark..... with a slider that has also been marked (a double marked badge). There might be an AA with loops as well.

The Assay office will pick a spot on the badge for the hallmark.

Im not sure if im allowed to lift Billys image from his post so i wont do it.
I know Jerry, ive seen a few cross belt plates with front hallmarks on. A Bent and Parker KRRC and a GJ Brigade ,i know of examples with front HMs . I think both have a markers mark on one side and the HM on the other.

If you look on Dead Spartan they have the same (HMd 1958) that is marked in a different place... also the double marked AA from Gaunt.

Griff does the Assaye office or the manufacturer put the company mark on ? The reason i ask is that it is in a different position too.

The manufacturer is responsible for marking their badges with their own mark, not the assay office. They just do the hallmarks.

The assay office required the dies for the badge (or whatever) from the manufacturer so that the blow of the punch is cushioned by the die - whether on front or back
