Hello Wayne
Your buttons are officer's mess waiter's buttons - worn by the soldiers serving as waiters in the mess. These buttons were an unofficial design, paid for out of regimental funds and therefore did not follow the usual regimental pattern. As such they can be difficult to date accurately not least because a lot of them were in use for a long period of time. Yours are an early pattern for the 17th (Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot according to a recent article written by Howard Ripley the noted expert on British military buttons. If they are large size (25mm or above) and for sale then I would certainly be interested in one. Feel free to PM me! Roger |

Hi Roger and Wayne,
I think the Simpson and Rook partnership ran from 1875 to 1899, so these particular buttons could be tail end of the 17th Regt of Foot pre-1881 or the Leicestershire Regiment, post 1881. As Roger states, this design of Mess Waiters button was used much earlier as well by the 17th (Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot. Nice buttons. Cheers Ian |
