Unrecorded...CEF title
During the First World War, the Canadian army made a concerted effort to collect and save for posterity all the badges worn by all units organized for service. The requests for badges were sent to all units overseas.
Several surprises are found in these files. One is a title for No 6 General Hospital. The establishment, officers and other ranks, wore the appropriate CAMC badges, but they were also authorized to wear LAVAL / CAMC / CANADA on their epaulets.

Documenting Insignia
Kind of sad really that the attempt to document insignia was not followed up in succeeding conflicts, I guess during the First World War there was still some of the old Victorian philosophy left of documenting and cataloguing.
Nearly a century later, there was no interest within the military or professional historians to catalogue any of the insignia used in Afghanistan; which perhaps may be a telling indicator of just closed minded we have become in preserving our heritage. |

Hi Ed, There was another more concerted effort during the Second World War, and the remnants of the effort are found all over archives files. Unfortunately, the initiatives start out strongly and then seemed to fade as time moved on.
