Unfortunately (and this is not a swipe at you or your badge, Alan) what cannot be ruled out is the possibility of your badge originally having been a legitimate bi-metal badge that has been blackened in order to deceive.

This scenario must be taken into account with such examples.

Exactly the problem with blackened badges when trying to date them. There exist 2 patterns of bb regular pattern badges post WW1 which have been attributed to TF Bns. I am thinking of the BB post 1920 Queens sheep on a torse that is featured on the Regtl Musem website and also a blackened brass South Lancs with Egypt scroll - the former may have nothing to do with the Tf Bn and the latter may just be a 1916 economy.

A minor correction - the 5th Bn King's Regt were given a new issued badge on 26-04-1921, Pattern 3510/1921 which was all WM !
Julian,

That's interesting. Worth exploring further perhaps.

I may be wrong, but I'd assume a blackened 5th Bn. badge would be of greater interest, historical and financial value than would an identical example in all-G/M. In my experience, the former is a rarer beast than the latter, and therefore possibly more sought after generally. This makes sense to me, but may not actually be the case.

I can only wonder why anyone would go to the trouble of reversing the blackening process of such a badge, for the purpose of presenting it as, what some might consider, an inferior beast?

That said, I have probably missed something obvious again [braces for potential cringe].

In Gaylor's list he includes Kings Liverpool all brass. No such thing but worn bb TF badge might be mistaken for such a thing.

Agreed; mistaken identity (as per this example cited in Julian and David’s article) Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry Hussars (KK1410), mistaken for an all-G/M OBLI badge.
