French? button identification please?
Hoping someone out there can help me identify this tunic button. The tunic is for sale but I’m unsure as to whether it is real or a theatrical costume. The button looks as though it has a horse jumping out of a French crown. The words beneath look Latin and I’m sure the first word is Sine. I’ve looked for military mottos that are ‘without -‘ but cannot find anything.
Can anyone help? Thanks! |

Can you tell us the mark on the reverse of the button?
It is almost certainly a British livery button, i.e. a servant's coat to a wealthy family. The crest on the front is the employer's and may be identified. |

It looks like an earl's coronet. So maybe as already suggested, a livery item.

I agree with the previous two posts, almost certainly a livery button as worn by certain household staff of the nobility, landed gentry and so on.
Try looking on this site - https://sites.google.com/site/liverybuttonsidentified/ If you can't find it there you could always email your query to them. Regards Roger |

Livery button
Thanks for the replies. I think you’re all right and they are livery buttons. The tunic is actually more of a dolman style jacket with frogging but I think it’s a theatrical costume rather than a hussar uniform. I think whoever made it has used livery buttons to make it look more authentic. I’ll pass on this piece, I don’t think it’s one for my collection.
Thanks again for all the replies. Merry Christmas! |

I believe it to be livery and from the little surrounding cloth/embroidery I'd hazard a guess for coachman.
