E.C. Snaith and Son Ltd - 1982 Badge List
Just found this list of restrikes in the fire hazard I call an archive.
Read the introduction.

Will get to the stage that to establish whether your badge is genuine or not will take a metallurgical analysis with sealed pattern or known provenance items.
Sad situation, glad I don't collect British badges to any great extent. Keith |

Thanks Philip,
I immediately note "Carlow Rangers". Perhaps here is the source of the modern large scale production of the attached badge. John |

Very interesting, thanks for posting.
No surprise to see certain badges on that list such as Yorkshire Hussars. I wonder how just accurate their claim to have the ‘‘original dies’’ on all those badges is? The double scroll 19th Hussars, 14th Royal Irish Rifles and WW2 Highland Regiment and Lowland Regiment are questionable IMO. I do not believe those badges to have been restruck from the original dies as there are small but clear differences between the fakes and known genuine badges. Add to that the badges with the accepted genuine traits are scarce and hard to find, as would be expected. John - is the Carlow Rifles a restrike or fake die (are there differences to the real ones)? Cheers, Luke |

Fascinating, I see the 4th VB Devon is on the list but not the standard BM Devon.

Thanks for posting, Phil.
Nothing specific as to the numbers produced, with sections 3, and 6, in the Ts&Cs indicating perhaps that these were produced to order, and not knocked out for, and horded in any great numbers by Snaith. JT |

I wonder if the sliders were stamped Gaunt Birmingham?
If indeed the makers were Gaunt. Regards, Bill. |

Short answer, badge has not been positively connected to the Carlow Rifles as far as I am aware. Not sure what it is . My most recent thinking is in this thread (see post 8 for one possibility) http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...=carlow+rifles Like you I do not believe Snaith's assertions of original dies. The fact that they used a fictional title for the badge does not instill me with any confidence in what they claim. John |

I can pick further holes in this !
BC/4 KLR 8(Scot)VBb in 'nickel silver' and in brass 1904 8VB badges appeared in 1901, there was no change of design in 1904. "Silver" might have been worn by officers but there was definitely no brass version BC/114 King's Liverpool Regiment Bi 1939 The regiment changed it's name in 1921 to King's Regiment (Liverpool). There as no specific change of design in 1939 (they would be still using Patt 10042/19260 though it is possible that they might have made a new die in 1939 !? Whoever created this list did not do much homework !!! |

I visited Denbigh many years ago and Snaiths were at that time an old firm of military tailors and my only memory was that they had some RAF officers items in their window but I never went inside the shop ( I have a feeling that it might not have been open ).
A lot of even small towns had Military Tailors at one time, I suppose that as the numbers in the armed forces started to decline, they lost a lot of their business and perhaps Snaiths thought they might make some income by selling crap to collectors. I am sure a lot of Military Tailors had collectors calling to see if they had any old stock for sale and that might be where the idea came from. P.B.
