Default Victorian Senior Officers Forage Cap Badge

Hello,

Here is what I think is a senior officers Victorian peaked forage cap badge for a Fire Brigade of a town/city beginning with the letter 'E'.

I have asked here as I think the 3 tower castle may be reflected in Volunteer Bn badges or even old Police badges and it may assist me in identifying the location.

It will be for sale in the future if not a local town to me.

Any help appreciated.

regards

Simon,

I have looked through "Civic Heraldry of England & Wales" by Scott-Giles (published 1933). The only possibility I can find is for the Urban District of Epsom (Surrey). All it says is " Epsom (Surrey). The seal bears a castle." There is no illustration. In the "Book of Public Arms" by Arthur Fox- Davies (published 1894), Epsom is not mentioned at all and no other town "fits" in respect of the design on your badge.

I think on the balance of probabilities its Epsom Fire Brigade, but you need to dig a bit further to confirm. I've not been able to find an illustration of the town seal for the period we are talking about (pre. 1937).

Dave.

PS. Epsom & Ewell District Council have a museum. I've no doubt that the old seal for the Urban District Council will reside there.

No, its not Exeter. If you look carefully, the towers have flags on. Exeter does not. Also the colours differ as does the design of the castle.

Thank you.

I considered Exeter and Ely but not Epsom. I will do some research.

Is there a PICA equivalent for Fire Brigade badge collectors??

regards

Not that I have been able to find. I haven't even found a facebook group.

There are any number of heraldic designs for Edinburgh civic arms, all bearing 3-towered castle with flags flying. Importantly, the castle is on a mount.

The stairs leading up to the castle would suggest Edinburgh.
