HMS Tartar small group of insignia
This was found in antique shop in Florida. According to the shop owner the items had been brought in and sold by either the grandson or great grandson.
I believe Tarter is mis spelled as it it should be Tartar. There has been a number of ships to bear this name. Unsure which best fits the time line, choice one does not work. Possibly choice two. *HMS Tartar (1854), ordered as the Russian screw corvette Wojn from a shipyard on the Thames, but seized by Britain while under construction, launched in 1854 and scrapped in 1866 *HMS Tartar (1886), a torpedo cruiser launched in 1886 and sold in 1906 *HMS Tartar (1907), a destroyer launched in 1907 and sold in 1921 Jack

Jack,
Lovely set. I think you your man will have been on the middle ship, the seaman gunners badge and 3rd class marksman badge were both introduced in 1890. 2nd class PO badge was around for a long time and by the 1890's the two chevrons represent 8 years good conduct. Only three men fit the bill in the national archive catalogue - suggest you download all three sets of papers, they are only £3 or £4 a set. Refs are - ADM188/177/131406 ADM188/102/93225 ADM188/120/102454 If they are looking for a new home PM me, Yours John |

Thank you John. The 2nd ship looked the most probable. I will likely do as you suggest and download all 3 files. Your response is much appreciated.
Jack
