Default 2nd Nottinghamshire RV Helmet

G'day there folks,

Picked up this cracking Officer's blue cloth helmet from the 2nd Nottinghamshire Rifle Volunteers at an online auction last week.

Helmet plate's a nice two piece construction with a black velvet backing. Silvering is still mostly there, albeit hidden under a bit of polish residue.
Took the helmet plate off, and there appears to be only minimal fading on the blue cloth.

I've had the OR's HP for a couple of years, so it'll be interesting to get the two plates side by side when I'm reunited with the rest of my badges.

Happy to have added this corker to my collection (now for the bank balance to recover)

All the best,
Alexander

Alexander,

Victorioan Volunteer militaria is my area of choice when collecting and the RVC at the top of that last.

Thats a very nice early round peak pattern helmet and a short lived plate worn upon it.

Well done.

regards

Cheers chaps, and thank you for that information Simon. Might I ask what dates it was worn/when they changed the shape of the helmet?

This is the first time I’ve really dipped my toes into helmets so I’ve a lot to learn!

Ewan,

In 1878 the Blue Cloth Home Service Helmet had a rounded peak when introduced. It only lasted a couple or so years (someone else may tell you exactly) when it was replaced by the familiar pointed peak.

However thats not to say Officers didnt continue to wear them after that time.

regards

Interesting, I wonder why they decided to modify the design. That being said, the British Army were quite fond of changing their headdresses every few years. I shudder to think of the number of shakos they got through, but all the more for me to collect!
