Hi Bantam, the VR badge is 4cm wide and 3cm tall. I have another version which I have'nt scanned yet that is slightly larger.

What I'd really like is a reproduction 1869 Shako cap to display it on. Does anyone know where I could get one?

Anyway now things are sorted I'll upload a few more prison items later tonight (Tues)

Here's another one for you Bantam. This is a Principal Warders bullion cap badge from a few years after WWI during the early 1920's when all members of the Prison Service looked similar to the Merchant Navy as they massed produced insignia for them but couldn't recruit staff/sailors for the "Merch".

I got this from a very old and retired ex Officer who used to collect items. This was handed down to him by his Dad in the very early 1960's when he joined. I even have a POA magazine from the 1970's that features it in an article he wrote about badges.

Attachment 7403

I'll scan more when I get time.

Hi HMPbadges,
I am unable to see the attachment I have informed the site webmaster.Hope they can resolve the problem because I would love to see the badge.
I measured the Edwardian Badge that I have and it coincides with the measurement of your Victorian one.
I hope you have got that ruler near to hand ?When I next visit a Fair I'm taking mine with me.

Hopefully that worked Bantam? It measures just under 6cm at the widest (middle) point and is 6cm tall. From photos I have the Warder/Officers version was probably as small as the previous VR crown and was bullion as well. I have not got one of those yet.

Default P.e.i

Hi All,
This is a Physical Education Officers Badge @1980's the later versions being embroidered into the apparel worn i.e.Tracksuits,vests etc.
P.E.I. were staff who volunteered to undergo specific training for which they had to pass exams to qualify for the position. On qualification a specialist allowance was paid and due to the difficulty it gave those that obtained a pass a certain kudos. They thus were reluctant to part with they hard earned badge so they are not that easy to obtain.

Great badge Bantam - I want one! The only Physical Education Prison Officer stuff I have has been literally cut from the more current items you describe, in blue or white etc and as you say quite rightly, the muscle machines in the Prison Service are kinda like the SAS in the way they treat their insignia. The training they have to do to get "badged" and into a tracksuit is out of this world and I don't blame them for litterally keeping everything close to their chests.

I do have a nice large 70's/80's PEO patch though that is a white rectangle with the old pre-87 cap badge embroidered on it in dark blue. And I also know that before this their insignia was all embroidered yellow/black items and they actually did use the crossed swords like the military PTI's with the letters P.E.O above in a shield shaped badge.

I think I'll have to spend a night ot two scanning everything I have now that I can finally post photos.

My websites going quite well. I work on each page late into the night (as you can see by the times I post on here ha ha).

Can I use that PEO pic you posted below on my site? That's a great example and of course I will give you a credit and name check.

I'll PM you about it. keep posting more badges though mate. Together we will get HMP stuff recognised as an established field for collectors more than it is now

Hi HMPbadges,
Thank you for your kind remarks I would be happy for you to use the photo.Your descriptive observations of PEI's did make me smile. As I have said, I believe The Service is undervalued my only wish is to promote the difficult and hard tasks they do, made more difficult by the ever changing burgeoning political correctness rules enforced on them.

Default Police/Prison Laison Officer Tie

Hi,
Here is another oddity it is a Police/Prison Laison Security Officers tie produced in red and blue colours from around the 70's era.
The Keys signify security.
The Owl signifies intelligence.
