If the 'loops' are small square fittings then it would be an overlay off the Waist Belt Clasp (WBC).

The second is the rectangular style Waist Belt Plate it came off but the odds of it fitting are very low and besides the Bengal Engineers is far better than the common one you showed.

This is mine and an older one, both Royal Regiment of Artillery.

Would this device have been worn exclusively on a waist belt? Apart from having tiny square fitments at N & S, I also have an example with normal cap badge loops at E & W. Would this latter be spurious? There is no indication it ever had the squared attachments.

So, could it at this stage have been either RE or RA?

regards Iain

Dress Regs 1900 for Waist-Plate only specify RA. However, I do not have earlier Regs to consult.
