Unknown WW1 Shoulder slide
Can anyone help identify this please? I'm trying to identify a soldier in a family photo, possibly ASC. He has what appears to be a cloth slide worn on the right shoulder. The only other identification is that he is a LCpl with three overseas stripes and one good conduct stripe. I have scoured the 'net and found no similar photos.
Many thanks David Last edited by davidm; 23-12-17 at 09:28 AM. |

Unfortunately not but it looks like a plain white / light coloured stripe and seems odd to be worn on just one shoulder. I've looked at a lot of WW1 photos and can find nothing like it.

Try posting the whole photo. Identification of the uniform or situation can help with these oddities.

The soldier is a LCpl or equivalent with one Good Conduct badge and 3 overseas chevrons. The photo must be later than Jan 1918.
Shoulder slides were used for all manner or purposes, but I do not recognise this one. |

Is it my eyes or are this Mans rank chevrons different to the standard pattern, they appear darker then normal to me.

In the Canadian Army, past and present, and in the British Army at some periods, I believe, a white slip on tab was the mark of an Officer Cadet in training. Is it possible that this NCO is on his way being commissioned?

Yes, quite right, but I think they were on both shoulders.

If he is ASC its possible its a Divisional Ammunition Column identification slide Red Blue Red. Monochrome can sometimes be deceptive in how colours are displayed.
