Border Regiment officers badge
Hi All
I just thought I'd share this latest acquisition, a BR officer's badge with marks for Ludlow & Co. According to Dean's (mooke07) excellent album of officer badges, this is the scarce 1902-1905 version lacking the battle honours for the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. Cheers, Alex |

Alex,
A lovely badge, I don't think the L&Co maker mark is Ludlow and is likely to be a private commision by another silversmith. Paul |

Once again this is a staff badge and would have been worn by the regiment's warrant officers too (the previous version by 'staff sergeants').

Thanks Paul, when I get a chance I'll have to investigate. I just assumed it'd be Ludlow. Off to have a beer and make dinner right now though...

Hello,
The mark on the rear is not the maker, but the retailer. Quite posh really as its Liberty & Co. London. regards

Ludlow as a name only came into being in 1933 previously being Lodski B & Sons/Lodski & Sons. There are a couple of candidates for the Retailer/Maker mark and as Simon points out Liberty used a similar mark, without any Assay marks it will be difficult to identify Paul |

I have two Royal Sussex regiment officers badges in my officers badge album. One is marked "Ludlow Sterling" & the other "L&Co".I never gave it a second thought that L&Co was a retailer.I always assumed that "L&Co" was Ludlows. Thanks for the info.

It is a post 1905 badge with the battle honours for the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 at the 3 o clock position, a makers variation found on some KC officers badges, and also adapted for OR's badges post War.
I bet your badge is roughly 46 x 53 mm, the no SA battle honour badge would be the same size as the QVC badge at 36 x 42 mm. Lovely badge nonetheless. Pre 1905 no South Africa battle honours: 12 o clock: Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive 3 o clock: Peninsula, Orthes, Alma 6 o clock: Lucknow, Sevastopol, Inkerman 9 o clock: Albuhera, Vittoria Post 1905 OR's with South Africa battle honours: 12 o clock: Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Alma 3 o clock: Peninsula, Sevastopol, Inkerman, Orthes 6 o clock: Relief of Ladysmith South Africa 1899-1902 9 o clock: Albuhera, Vittoria, Lucknow Some KC officers and all post WWII: 12 o clock: top: Peninsula, Albuhera, Vittoria, Pyrenees 3 o clock: Relief of Ladysmith, South Africa, 1899-1902 6 o clock: Nive, Nivelle, Orthes 9 o clock: Lucknow, Sevastopol, Inkerman, Alma Rgds, Thomas. Hi Thomas
Thanks. I just assumed they'd be on the 6 o'clock spot and didn't look further. Just goes to show...duh. Cheers, Alex |

Hi Thomas
Yes, you were quite right, it is the bigger badge about 46 x 53mm though I haven't measured it exactly. About the same size as the O/Rs badges. Cheers, Alex |

If yours would have been the smaller size it would be quite the anomaly, hence my question. I suppose that leaves at least one more badge for you to find then...
